Blackhawk, a prestigious country club community, was developed on approximately 4,800 acres beginning in 1977. A large portion of the community has been set aside as open space, and about 2,400 traditional and contemporary homes and tennis villas have been built. Blackhawk has an upscale town center, a country club, 20 lighted tennis courts and a 25-acre sports complex. Ken Behring (former owner of the Seattle Seahawks), founded Blackhawk. Prestigious homeowners have included Jose Canseco and John Madden.

Overall, this is a young community: the 1990 Census showed that 28 percent of the population is under age 18 and only 18 percent over age 55.

Blackhawk students are served by the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Achievement scores for this school district consistently rank in the top 10 percentile among California Schools.
